Artist Statement

My work explores the shifting identity inside the home and outside as a queer Vietnamese American. As a child of immigrants, I juggle between the Western values of individuality and self-expression versus the Eastern collectivist structured morals.

I use time-sensitive and temporal word art installation to play with forgotten language and hidden identity. I explore the struggle of sitting between two hemispheres and create in search of reconciliation within the two.

Bio

Tarra Vu experiments with sculpture, installation, and word art, grasping at several materials in pursuit of expressing ritualistic labor and unseen acts of love. They are based in Louisville, Kentucky and have recently been working with unfired clay—specifically the process of clay slaking,— in temporal word art. Tarra’s work has been seen in local shows including Alchemy Artist Collective’s Tasteless and Untitled #2. They expect to receive their BFA at University of Louisville in 2025.
